Our manifesto for change – a three point plan to tackle the Northern housing crisis

Nov 25, 2016

Acute housing shortages are no longer an exclusive issue of London and the south east. The north of England is in the grip of its own regional crisis, with falling home ownership and a lack of good quality homes to rent.

Our manifesto calls upon the Government to work with us on a simple three point plan that can accelerate house building radically in a practical and affordable way.

Responding to the Autumn Statement, Mark Henderson, Chair of Homes for the North, said:

“We warmly welcome the £1.4bn boost to get Britain building. The Chancellor’s decision to scrap funding restrictions on the kinds of homes that we can build to meet local demand is also a step in the right direction. The north faces its unique challenges in terms of supply and we urge a significant portion of that money to be allocated across our region. We know that the availability of good quality homes for graduates could play a critical role in stemming the brain drain of talent from across the north. We also have a number of neighbourhoods in desperate need of regeneration. Investing in critical infrastructure in these areas could entice businesses to invest, unlocking significant economic growth.”
